For various reasons, I put this Substack on the back burner for the past few weeks, but quite frankly I don’t really know why. I guess I was busy, but I don’t actually know *with what* aside from my brief, four-day excursion to Massachusetts last week. I guess maybe job-hunting and interview stuff did occupy most of my brain space, and I did have a few actual commissions I was working on, too—yes, legitimate publications that are paying me. In any event, I have returned with a little update on what I’ve been enjoying recently, which does include the trip to my parents’ house.

Visiting My Parents

I always like visiting my parents, even though the town they settled in after leaving my hometown is extremely boring, and there is never really anything to do unless you want to drive over 30 minutes on the Boston Turnpike—a deeply unpleasant experience. But it is nice to have a place to escape that so-called hustle and bustle of the city for a little bit, and I love spending time with my mom and dad. We have a nice little relationship, the three of us, and we watch movies almost every night that I visit, which can sometimes spur tense arguments on which movie to pick because I don’t like being in charge and then getting blamed for my bad taste if they don’t like it (May December PTSD). Still, I think compared to a lot of my friends’ parents, mine are extremely open-minded when it comes to films. The long-gestating theater in their little town finally opened after edging its opening for the past five years, and my parents really enjoyed Sinners. At home, they laughed their heads off at Dream Scenario, and we threw on a couple Woody Allen flicks as well. I learned that my dad has been binge-watching Woody Allen movies on Tubi recently.
